OUR ISLAND ...

INTRODUCTION

Choiseul Province or Lauru Island is one of the eight major Islands in Solomon Islands. The Islands has its own provincial government. The Provincial headquarter for the Island province is at Taro Island, which is on the most northern tip of the Island. It may take only 30 mintues to walk around the Taro Island. The Taro Headquarter is proximity to the Choiseul bay, just across on the mainland which is about 5 minutes away by outboard motor.

VILLAGES

Most, almost all, the villages in Choiseul Province are along the coast. This allows for easy access to transport, and other government social services. These villages are usually created according to either tribal  or religious affilliations. The Oliveti village is the most inland village in the province.

TARO HEADQUARTER

The Taro Headquarter is the main town in the Province. It has basic social services like internet, fixed and mobile phone services. Both the phone and internet services connect with the main Internet and phone provider in Honiara via Satellite. The mobile phone service uses 3G frequency.

In addition, the Taro town has an airstrip. The airstrip allows for regular flights from Honiara and nearby towns in Western Province. Taro town also has banking services too. However, it does not provide the Intermational transactions for the banking services. The Taro town use tanks to catch rain as the main source of water. This often cause challenges during dry seasons. There is a provincial hospital on the Taro township.

The provincial government is currently working towards expanding the headquarter of Choiseul Province to the mainland at Choiseul Bay. There are some piece meal work done on this expansion but it is a national government project.
